Letter from the Owner – August 2020

Is it over yet, will it ever be over? I don’t know about you but I am starting
to feel like this Covid pandemic is never going to be over… maybe after
the election it will finally end. It has affected everyone I know, myself
included mentally, financially and even physically whether they had it or
not because we are limited in so many ways. What few events there are
may not even happen.

We all feel like we are in limbo, unable to make
plans because almost day to day the status of what we can do changes. I
am trying to remain positive, but I have to be honest it is hard. Let’s stick
together through these tough times and be there for one another. Let’s
try to smile vs. frown each day… oh wait, you can’t see if I am smiling or
frowning through my mandatory mask I am now forced to wear. Ha Ha

I had to be facetious with that one because I don’t agree. Regardless, I
wait patiently in hopes that this will be over soon and we can once again
enjoy social activities such as concerts, rallies, bike runs, etc.
Please don’t forget to continue to reach out to friends and family that may
still be struggling during these difficult times. Please help each other.
Please support the advertisers you see in this issue that are still paying
for ads and hoping that August brings back life in their businesses.

Without them I would not be able to still publish this magazine for you to
enjoy so please be sure to patronize these wonderful people and places.

Everything that has a beginning has an ending. Make your peace with
that and all will be well- Buddha.

This is a great saying to remember through all this. I hope it brings you hope and peace.

Find Gratitude

During times like this we have to decide whether we are going to buy into all the fear, frustration and political propaganda going on in the world today or are we going to choose to step back and look at the positive side and be grateful for our family, friends and what we do have.  I live in the small town of Midland and our city and surrounding cities recently went through additional devastation with 2 major dams breaching causing catastrophic damage to homes, boats, etc and leaving both Sanford and Wixom lake now empty.  One thing I noticed as we were all panicking and bracing for the unknown is no one was thinking about social distancing, wearing a mask or anything regarding Covid-19.  We were coming together to help one another prepare and then afterwards helping clean up.  I heard countless stories of people volunteering to help friends, family, businesses and even strangers clean up.  In this month’s Thunder Cam there are 2 photos of a young boy that wanted to help the people of Sanford that were hit by collecting cans to raise money for them.  I donated 4 bags and he filled nearly 2 semis I heard.  My heart breaks for those that lost their homes and belongings and are now left with a mortgage but no coverage from insurance.  Can you imagine if that was you? Please keep an eye on my Facebook page for upcoming opportunities to help.  Bikers are the most charitable group of people and I am so grateful that my home was not affected as many others were.

Please don’t forget to continue to reach out to friends and family that may still be struggling during these difficult times. Please help each other.  Please support the advertisers you see in this issue that are still paying for ads and hoping that July brings back life in their businesses.  Without them I would not be able to still publish this magazine for you to enjoy so please be sure to patronize these wonderful people and places.

The Unknown

As I sit in my office on this rainy, mid-May writing this letter I am in a place of the unknown. It is always hard to write ahead when working on the magazine each month, but this month it is even more difficult. We are supposed to be released by the end of the month from our Stay Home, Stay Safe order, but who knows. Our governor has extended it so many times that no one can really be sure. So many things are left in the unknown and completely up in the air. Events are not sure if they will be able to still be held, bike nights are left as an unknown unless the bars and restaurants are able to open back up. I find that most people I talk to are devastated by all of this and are left hurting financially, mentally exhausted and pretty much fed up with this order. Whenever it does go back to our new normal, it will be just that… a new normal. We all can be certain that this has changed our world and the people in it for the good and bad. I hope everyone is reaching out to friends and family at this point and trying to have some fun and live life as fully as possible during these trying times. Please help each other. Please support the advertisers you see in this issue that are still paying for ads and hoping that June brings back life in their businesses. Without them I would not be able to still publish this magazine for you to enjoy so please be sure to patronize these wonderful people and places.

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can and Wisdom to know the difference.

It’s Always Darkest Before the Dawn

My cousin Eric used to say that along with, “That which is in the dark always comes to light”. They both hold a similar meaning. These last couple months have been a time of uncertainties, challenges for many of us financially, physically and emotionally. I have been with my teenage daughter now in complete isolation for 40 days straight, anyone with kids and have survived the teenage years can surely relate to that challenge. I made sure to stock up on the essentials; food, wine, snacks, beer, liquor, more wine, more beer and frozen goods. Regardless, “This too shall pass”.
I want to take an extra moment to really praise my advertisers and supporters and subscribers to Thunder Roads Michigan. Just like in life we see who are true friends are when we go through difficult times; we see with this publication the incredible businesses that are continuing to support it throughout all of this and because of them, I was able to print a publication this month and last. So thank you so much! I am so grateful for your support and honored to be able to still produce Michigan’s #1 free motorcycle magazine both in print and digital versions. Please readers be sure to patronize these businesses when you are looking for a jacket, lawyer, restaurant, bike shop or a home as these advertisers have paid to show you that they are biker friendly, supporters of Thunder Roads and of Michigan!

That’s a Wrap

Although the events and the season are still in full swing right now, they will start wrapping up soon and become less and less frequent as we head into fall—and then, well, you know what’s next after that. I am not even going to say it. However, with that said, this is the last issue of the year for Thunder Roads Michigan. I will focusing on the events and trying to hit as many as possible before end of season. I will be bringing the 2020 Thunder Roads Michigan wall calendars with me, and even some of the models for autographs and photos with purchase. Now for some “Mo” Advice:

Seize the moment! Contact that old friend, take that trip, and buy that bike! Life is too short to just think about doing something. If it’s backed up with love, kindness and goodness, then do it!

From the Owner – July

Happy 4th of July!

Happy summertime!
We have had a crazy start to a less-than-mediocre spring and I am hoping summer shapes up.
We only have a few good months to ride in our great state so it sure would be nice if the rain would stop and the sun and warmth could come through and stay a while.
I hope everyone has a nice holiday whether you spend it riding, camping, boating or just relaxing around the house—enjoy!

Be sure that you get your Free Ride Card and participate in the Ride ’n Win summer-long contest. You have a chance of winning prizes at each stop and you can check in every week. You are just throwing prizes away if you don’t take advantage of this fun, no-catch contest.

Be sure to like Thunder Roads Magazine of Michigan on Facebook to keep up-to-date with the latest happenings.

Also, if you haven’t checked out our Thunder Store, make sure to do so by going to www.ThunderRoadsMichigan.com.
If you order a T-shirt or hoodie, email me a picture and you might be featured in a future issue showing your support in one of our Thunder Cams!

Please remember our advertisers when you are looking to get a cool jacket, have a great meal, get your motorcycle tweaked, or need some legal assistance; you know they have good taste and we recommend them!
Thank you to all of our loyal advertisers—we appreciate you! Thank you, readers, for your support and making Thunder Roads Magazine #1!

Now for some “Mo” Advice:
You can plan for what you think may happen, but chances are you will end up with just the opposite. So don’t worry yourself over things, people, and outside circumstances you can’t control. It always ends up working out just the way it was meant to in the end.

Ron Finch!

I am very excited about this special edition of Thunder Roads featuring Ron Finch. My friend Denise and I made a trip to his shop and had a fun day of taking pics, hearing stories, and looking at Ron’s many many amazing creations from motorcycles to art, both indoors and out. When we arrived Ruth (Ron’s wife) had an amazing homemade lunch prepared for us. We felt right at home immediately, surrounded by their generous hospitality.
I nearly had a heart attack when I walked into the bathroom and was greeted by a very large stuffed animal serpent in the bathtub! When you’re not expecting to see a serpent, it tends to catch you off guard. What a great day and fun time we had! Sending out a special thank-you again to Ron, Ruth, and daughter Caryn.
Both Ron Finch and Vince Consiglio (President of ABATE of Michigan) are going to be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame in August. Next month we will be interviewing and featuring Vince for all of the hard work he has done for ABATE, which directly affects us as Michigan motorcyclists.

The 6th Annual Michigan Thunder Run Ride ’n Win Contest has officially begun! Dust off those Ride Cards or sign up for a new one, but get out there and start checking in at the stops that are listed in this issue. We have some new stops this year for you to check out, along with some of our favorite places from past years. Just make sure you get your Free Ride Card and participate. There is no catch, folks—you have a chance of winning prizes at each stop and you can check in every week! If you know a biker-friendly establishment or have a suggestion for one, please email me at Editor@ThunderRoadsMichigan.com and we will check it out.

May it Please Be Warm Now!

We Michiganders go through the same thing every year this time of the year—crazy teases of spring mixed with reminders that Michigan doesn’t want to let go of winter yet. As I sit and write this letter, I am hoping, in a couple of weeks, when May issue is out on the shelves, that it will finally be warm and riding season will be in full swing. Unlike yesterday, which brought us 4 inches of snow in the middle of April! So come on, Michigan, let’s spring into action.

The events are pouring in — there are many to choose from this month and many to mark on your calendars. Check out the pull-out calendar for our advertisers’ events. Also, get ready to ride (or drive or float, as all vehicles now welcome to participate) in the 6th Annual Michigan Thunder Run Ride ’n Win Contest that will be starting soon! This is a summer-long contest (actually running from June thru September) where you can win prizes just for checking in at the Ride ’n Win Stops. We’ll have the complete listing of where you can go to get your FREE Ride card as well as the places to check in for each month…all coming up in the June issue. We will give you a heads-up prior to the kick-off on the Thunder Roads Michigan Facebook page. Make sure to like us so you can keep up-to-date on this as well as each month’s entire list of many, many winners! If you have a biker friendly establishment or a suggestion for one, please email me at Editor@ThunderRoadsMichigan.com and we will check it out.
