A Campaign for Mental Health AwarenessIn November 2024, I lost a friend I had the honor of meeting in Iraq to suicide. The pain of losing someone to the silent battles they fought within is a burden no one should carry alone. It’s a stark reminder of how critical mental health awareness and support are not only within the veteran community but for everyone.As bikers, we know the freedom that riding brings a sense of release and connection with the road, our community, and ourselves. With our new campaign, “Drop the Clutch, Lose the F*cks,” we aim to use that connection to foster open conversations about mental health and suicide awareness. This isn’t just for veterans—it’s for anyone who has struggled or knows someone who has.The Battle Within: Mental Health in VeteransVeterans are 1.5 times more likely than civilians to die by suicide, and male veterans are at an even greater risk. For many, transitioning from the military to civilian life can be an isolating and overwhelming experience. Factors such as PTSD, survivor’s guilt, chronic pain, and difficulty finding a sense of purpose outside the service compound these challenges.Yet, this issue isn’t limited to veterans. Suicide rates among men are nearly four times higher than among women. Men are less likely to seek help, often due to societal stigmas around masculinity and emotional vulnerability.Men and Mental Health • Suicide Statistics: In 2023, approximately 79% of all suicide deaths in the U.S. were men. This staggering statistic reflects the need for better mental health resources and cultural shifts in how we address men’s emotional well-being. • Why Men Are at Risk: Men are less likely to express emotions or seek therapy, often choosing to “tough it out” instead. They may also use more lethal means in suicide attempts, leading to higher fatality rates. • Warning Signs in Men: Irritability, aggression, withdrawing from loved ones, substance abuse, and expressing hopelessness.Women and Mental HealthWhile women attempt suicide more often than men, they are less likely to die from it. This is attributed to using less lethal methods and being more likely to seek help. However, women face unique stressors such as societal pressures, trauma, and caregiving responsibilities that can impact their mental health.Bringing Awareness to the Motorcycle CommunityThe “Drop the Clutch, Lose the F*cks” campaign is about letting go of the stigmas that keep us silent and building a culture of support and understanding. Here’s how we plan to make a difference: • Community Rides: Hosting group rides dedicated to mental health awareness and encouraging open conversations during stops. • Resource Sharing: Providing information about veteran-specific resources like the VA’s crisis line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) and general mental health hotlines. • Storytelling: Sharing stories from fellow bikers about their struggles and victories over mental health challenges. • Workshops: Collaborating with organizations to offer workshops on recognizing signs of mental distress and providing support.Facts to Remember 1. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 10-34 in the U.S. 2. For every suicide, approximately 25 people attempt it. 3. Veterans account for nearly 14% of all adult suicide deaths in the U.S., though they make up only about 8% of the population.Let’s Ride TogetherIf you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone. Talking about it doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human. We ride for freedom, but we also ride for purpose. Together, let’s make the road a place where no one feels left behind.Join us in spreading awareness and saving lives.
